Glucosamine sulfate
Glucosamine sulfate in Nervecept
Glucosamine sulfate is an amino sugar found in cartilage, and it is the largest line on the Nervecept label at 500 mg per capsule. Research on it is about knee osteoarthritis and is mixed. No cited source tested it for nerves. Most glucosamine comes from shellfish, and the label says CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish).

What it is01
What is glucosamine sulfate in Nervecept?
Glucosamine sulfate is an amino sugar that your body makes and that also sits in cartilage, the cushion in your joints. Supplement makers sell it as a joint product, and most of it is made from the shells of shellfish (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)).
On the Nervecept bottle it is the first line of the Supplement Facts panel. The panel prints 500 mg per capsule, with the serving size set at one capsule.
The bottle front says “Nerve Repair Formula”. That is a name, not a test result. The sources we cite on glucosamine are about knees and hips, so the profile below sets the label beside what they say.
| Name on the label | Glucosamine Sulfate |
|---|---|
| What it is | An amino sugar found in cartilage; most supplements are made from shellfish shells |
| Group on the panel | Cartilage-type compounds |
| Amount per serving (label) | 500 mg |
| % Daily Value | Not established |
| Amount used in research | None of the sources cited here states a research amount |
| Strength of evidence | Mixed for knee osteoarthritis; not studied for nerve problems |
| Marketed or traditional use | Marketed for joint comfort |
| Main caution | Most glucosamine is shellfish-derived; may raise blood sugar in some people and has been linked to more bleeding with warfarin. |

The amount02
How much glucosamine is in one Nervecept capsule?
One Nervecept capsule holds 500 mg of glucosamine sulfate, about 72% of the 699 mg the label lists. That makes glucosamine the bulk of the capsule.
The label says take one capsule a day, so a day's dose is 500 mg. A bottle holds 30 capsules and lasts 30 days.
The sources we cite do not state a research amount for glucosamine, so we make no claim that 500 mg is more or less than a trial used. We would rather say that than guess.
| Label line | Amount | Share of 699 mg |
|---|---|---|
| Glucosamine sulfate | 500 mg | about 72% |
| Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) | 67 mg | about 10% |
| Chondroitin sulfate | 50 mg | about 7% |
| Turmeric (Curcuma longa) root | 50 mg | about 7% |
| Quercetin, methionine, MSM, bromelain | 8 mg each | about 1% each |
Shares are our arithmetic from the printed amounts. Daily Value is not established for any line. See every line on the Nervecept supplement facts page.
The research03
Does glucosamine sulfate work, and is it studied for nerves?
Glucosamine sulfate has mixed results for knee osteoarthritis, and none of the sources we cite tested it for nerve problems. The research is about joint pain and stiffness.
A Cochrane review pooled 25 trials with 4,963 people. Trials of one brand preparation favored glucosamine over placebo. Trials of other preparations showed no clear benefit (Cochrane, Glucosamine for OA). That review is older, so read it as a signal, not a verdict.
NCCIH describes the results as mixed. Two big guidelines disagree: one recommends against glucosamine for knee osteoarthritis, and others lean more favorable (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (ACR/Arthritis Foundation 2019 OA guideline (AFP summary)).
Knee osteoarthritis
Mixed. Some trials of one preparation were positive. Others were not (Cochrane, Glucosamine for OA).
Guidelines
The 2019 ACR and Arthritis Foundation guideline recommends against glucosamine alone or with chondroitin (ACR/Arthritis Foundation 2019 OA guideline (AFP summary)) (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin).
Nerve health
No cited source tests glucosamine for numbness, tingling or neuropathy. No trial has tested Nervecept either.
The Arthritis Foundation calls it considered safe to try for joint stiffness, with mixed benefit (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin). That is a joint framing, not a nerve one. For the wider picture, read our Nervecept benefits and evidence page.
Shellfish04
Is glucosamine made from shellfish, and is it safe with a shellfish allergy?
Yes, most glucosamine is made from shellfish, and the Nervecept label says CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish). That is a declared allergen, so read the line on the bottle you receive.
Doctors writing in American Family Physician advise avoiding glucosamine after a severe, anaphylactic reaction to seafood. They also note two small studies that found no allergic reactions in people with a confirmed shellfish allergy (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)). The evidence is thin either way.
So the label is the rule. If you have ever had hives, swelling or trouble breathing after shrimp, crab, lobster or crayfish, ask a doctor before the first capsule.
Do not start on your own. Take the bottle and the Supplement Facts to your doctor or pharmacist. Allergy to shellfish can be serious, and the label is clear about the source.
Cautions05
Is glucosamine safe with warfarin, diabetes or other medicines?
Glucosamine can matter if you take warfarin or manage blood sugar, so ask your doctor or pharmacist first. NCCIH reports it has been linked to more bleeding in people on warfarin (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin).
It may also raise blood sugar in some people. American Family Physician reports raised sugar in some cases, though a pooled analysis found no effect on fasting glucose, and the authors say people with diabetes can use it safely (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)). That is not the same as no need to ask.
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. A supplement is not a substitute for it. Large studies found no major safety problems, and stomach upset is the usual complaint (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (Cochrane, Glucosamine for OA).
| If this is you | What the sources say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Take warfarin | Linked to more bleeding (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) | Ask the prescriber first |
| Have diabetes | May raise blood sugar in some people (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) | Ask your doctor; watch your readings |
| Shellfish allergy | Most glucosamine is shellfish-derived (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)) | Ask a doctor; the label declares crayfish |
| Pregnant or nursing | Little is known about safety (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) | Ask a physician, as the label says |
Before you start06
What should you check before taking a glucosamine capsule?
Check the label, your allergies and your medicine list before you take any glucosamine capsule. Each takes a minute.
Read the allergen line first. Then put the bottle beside your pill list. If numbness or tingling is the reason you are looking, a doctor can test for causes such as diabetes or low vitamin B12 (MedlinePlus, Numbness and tingling).
- Find CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish) on the bottle and decide if that is a problem for you.
- Bring the Supplement Facts panel to a pharmacist, especially if you use a blood thinner.
- Take one capsule a day with 8 oz of water, as the label says, and do not exceed the dose.
- See a doctor for numbness or tingling that is new, spreading or paired with weakness.
Compare the other seven lines on the Nervecept ingredients guide, or read about the chondroitin sulfate line, which often travels with glucosamine in joint products. Side effects across the whole capsule are on the Nervecept side effects page.
FAQ07
Nervecept questions people ask
Is glucosamine in Nervecept made from shellfish?
Most glucosamine is made from shellfish shells, and the Nervecept label declares CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish). The label does not say which source the glucosamine uses, so treat the capsule as a shellfish product and ask a doctor if you have an allergy (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)).
How many milligrams of glucosamine are in Nervecept?
Each Nervecept capsule lists 500 mg of glucosamine sulfate. With one capsule a day, that is 500 mg daily. It is about 72% of the 699 mg the label lists, and the largest of the eight ingredient lines.
Does glucosamine help nerve pain or neuropathy?
No cited source shows that. Glucosamine research is about knee osteoarthritis and is mixed (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (Cochrane, Glucosamine for OA). Numbness and tingling have many causes, so a doctor should look at any new or spreading symptom rather than relying on a joint supplement.
Can I take glucosamine with warfarin?
Ask your prescriber first. NCCIH reports that glucosamine has been linked to more bleeding in people taking warfarin (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin). Keep taking the blood thinner as directed, and tell the pharmacist about every supplement you use.
Does glucosamine raise blood sugar?
It may in some people, according to NCCIH, though a pooled analysis found no effect on fasting glucose (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (AFP, Glucosamine questions (Pirotta)). If you have diabetes, ask your doctor before starting and watch your readings after you begin.
Is glucosamine sulfate the same as glucosamine hydrochloride?
They are two forms of the same amino sugar. The Nervecept label lists the sulfate form. The older Cochrane review found that results differed by preparation, which is why the exact product matters (Cochrane, Glucosamine for OA).
What do the guidelines say about glucosamine?
The 2019 ACR and Arthritis Foundation guideline recommends against glucosamine alone or with chondroitin for osteoarthritis. Other groups are more favorable, and the Arthritis Foundation calls the research mixed (ACR/Arthritis Foundation 2019 OA guideline (AFP summary)) (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin).
