Chondroitin sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate in Nervecept

Quick answer

Chondroitin sulfate is a building block of cartilage, and the Nervecept label lists 50 mg per capsule, about 7% of the 699 mg total. A Cochrane review found a small, low-quality short-term pain reduction in osteoarthritis. No cited source tested it for nerves. It has been linked to more bleeding with warfarin.

What it is01

What is chondroitin sulfate in Nervecept?

Chondroitin sulfate is a long sugar chain that helps give cartilage its springiness, and Nervecept lists it at 50 mg per capsule. It is the third line on the Supplement Facts panel.

As a supplement it is sold for joint comfort. The source varies by product. It may come from cow or pig cartilage, from shellfish, or be made in a lab (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin). The Nervecept label does not say which one it uses.

The bottle front reads “Nerve Repair Formula”. Chondroitin is not a nerve ingredient in the sources we cite. The profile below keeps the label and the evidence side by side.

The amount02

How much chondroitin is in one Nervecept capsule?

One Nervecept capsule holds 50 mg of chondroitin sulfate, one tenth of the glucosamine line. That is about 7% of the 699 mg listed.

At one capsule a day, you get 50 mg of chondroitin daily. Chondroitin and glucosamine are often paired in joint products, and here the pair makes up about 79% of the capsule.

The sources we cite do not give a research amount for chondroitin, so we do not compare 50 mg to a trial dose. Anyone who prints that comparison without a source is guessing.

The research03

Does chondroitin sulfate reduce osteoarthritis pain?

Chondroitin sulfate showed a small short-term pain reduction in osteoarthritis, and the Cochrane reviewers rated that result low quality. The review covered 8 trials and 1,077 people for short-term pain (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA).

The long-term pain benefit was smaller, and its range included no effect at all. Physical function was not clearly different from placebo. Many trials were paid for by manufacturers or did not report who paid (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA).

On safety, withdrawals from side effects matched placebo. Serious side effects were less frequent with chondroitin in six studies (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA). That is reassuring for trial settings, though it does not cover every medicine mix.

01

Short term

A small pain reduction, rated low quality because trials disagreed (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA).

02

Long term and function

Smaller pain effect and no clear gain in function over placebo (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA).

03

Nerves

Not tested in any cited source. No trial has tested Nervecept.

Guidelines are cautious. The 2019 ACR and Arthritis Foundation guideline recommends against glucosamine alone or with chondroitin, though it conditionally supports chondroitin for hand osteoarthritis (ACR/Arthritis Foundation 2019 OA guideline (AFP summary)) (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin). Our Nervecept claims versus evidence page sets this beside the bottle claims.

Cautions04

Is chondroitin safe with warfarin or a shellfish allergy?

Chondroitin has been linked to more bleeding in people who take warfarin, so ask your prescriber before you use it. NCCIH makes the same point for glucosamine (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin).

Shellfish is the other question. Chondroitin can come from shellfish, and the Nervecept label declares CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish) for the capsule as a whole. The glucosamine line is the more likely shellfish source, but the label does not say. Treat the whole capsule as a shellfish product.

Little is known about safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin). The label tells pregnant or nursing mothers, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition to consult a physician first.

On a blood thinner?

Do not start or stop anything on your own. Show the pharmacist the full Supplement Facts and ask whether the mix fits your dose.

Before you start05

How do you check a chondroitin supplement before you take it?

Check the source, the allergen line and your medicine list, in that order. Three steps cover it.

A label that names its source is easier to judge than one that does not. Nervecept names none for chondroitin, which is a fair question for the order desk.

  1. Read the allergen line

Find CONTAINS: shellfish (crayfish). If shellfish bothers you, ask a doctor first.

  2. Ask about the source

Email or call the order desk and ask whether the chondroitin comes from an animal or a lab. Save the answer.

  3. Show your medicines

Bring the bottle to a pharmacist if you use warfarin, a daily aspirin or an NSAID.

Order-desk contacts are on our contact page. If numbness or tingling is new or spreading, see a doctor, since many causes can be treated (MedlinePlus, Numbness and tingling). The remaining lines are on the Nervecept ingredients guide, and cautions for the whole capsule are on the side effects page.

FAQ06

Nervecept questions people ask

How much chondroitin sulfate is in each Nervecept capsule?

Each capsule lists 50 mg of chondroitin sulfate, about 7% of the 699 mg printed on the Supplement Facts panel. With one capsule a day, that is 50 mg daily. The glucosamine line is ten times larger.

Where does the chondroitin in Nervecept come from?

The label does not say. Chondroitin in supplements can come from cow, pig or shellfish cartilage, or be made in a lab (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin). Ask the order desk, and treat the capsule as a shellfish product because the label declares crayfish.

Does chondroitin sulfate help nerve damage or neuropathy?

No cited source says so. The Cochrane review looked at osteoarthritis pain and found a small, low-quality short-term effect (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA). For numbness or tingling, a doctor can look for causes that are treatable.

Is it safe to take chondroitin with warfarin?

Not without asking. Chondroitin has been linked to more bleeding in people taking warfarin (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin). Keep taking the blood thinner as prescribed and tell the pharmacist about the supplement before you begin.

What did the Cochrane review find about chondroitin?

It found a small short-term pain reduction rated low quality, a smaller long-term effect, and no clear gain in function. Side-effect withdrawals matched placebo (Cochrane, Chondroitin for OA). Many trials had manufacturer sponsorship or unreported funding.

Why do glucosamine and chondroitin appear together?

Both are cartilage-type compounds sold for joint comfort, so makers often combine them. Studies have tested them alone and together, and results for the pair are mixed (NCCIH, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin).

Do the guidelines recommend chondroitin?

Mostly not. The 2019 ACR and Arthritis Foundation guideline recommends against glucosamine alone or with chondroitin, while conditionally supporting chondroitin for hand osteoarthritis (ACR/Arthritis Foundation 2019 OA guideline (AFP summary)) (Arthritis Foundation, Glucosamine and chondroitin). Neither covers nerve problems.
